However, two main types of terroir can be distinguished: those close to the sea, and those in the interior of the peninsula, on the Apennine mountain range.<br \/>\nFor each region, the regulations distinguish recommended grape varieties from authorized grape varieties, with the others not being entitled to the appellation of origin.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"Style2\" align=\"left\">Among the best-known local white grape varieties<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Trebbiano Toscano<\/strong>, close to the Ugni Blanc of the Charentes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Malvasia del Chianti<\/strong>, in Tuscany and the south.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verdicchio<\/strong>, in the Marches and Latium.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"Style2\" align=\"left\">Among the best-known red grape varieties<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sangiovese<\/strong>. It is the grape variety of Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Barbera and Nebbiolo<\/strong>, mainly in the northwest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Montepulciano<\/strong>, throughout Central Italy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"Style2\">International grape varieties<\/h2>\n<p>Developing in Italy as elsewhere, they mainly have the following two origins:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The grape varieties of the Rhine valley, such as <strong>Riesling<\/strong> and <strong>Sylvaner<\/strong>, which are found especially in the northeast of the peninsula: in Trentino, Friuli and Alto Adige.<\/li>\n<li>The noble French grape varieties: <strong>Chardonnay<\/strong> for the whites and the three Bordeaux varieties: <strong>Cabernet Sauvignon<\/strong>, <strong>Cabernet Franc<\/strong> and <strong>Merlot<\/strong>, which are gaining ground in most regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Between the wines that follow the rules of the appellation and the mavericks who want the grape varieties of their choice, two types of wine can be distinguished:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appellation wines<\/strong>: the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), the DOCG and the country wines called vino tipico (IGT).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vino da tavola, table wines<\/strong>, possibly with the mention IG (Indicazione Geografica), which can be of highly variable quality, from the lowest to the best, as <strong>Sassicaia<\/strong> proudly boasts of being nothing more than a table wine.
