Valley of the Temples, Agrigento
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean. In addition to Italian, which is the official language, most inhabitants also speak Sicilian, a language of Latin origin with Arab, Spanish, French and Italian influences.
Its capital is the city of Palermo.
The island is marked by the many civilizations that settled there throughout history: Greeks, Romans, Normans, Arabs, Spaniards … they left their mark on the architecture, the customs, but also the Sicilian dialect.
Although marked by mass tourism and unregulated construction on certain coasts, many regions have remained picturesque. The sometimes desertified hinterland contrasts with the coastline; moreover, most villages experienced a significant exodus from the end of the 19th century.
