Lake Iseo in Lombardy

Lombardy is a region of contrasts, mountainous in the north where the Alps rise above 3000 metres, with vast wilderness areas such as in the Stelvio Park. While in the south stretch the vast plains and rice fields of the Po Valley.

Water flows down from the snow-capped peaks through the valleys to feed the two great lakes: Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, the latter being more of a “resort” than the former, which nevertheless has plenty of charm with its many luxurious villas built on its shores.

The south of the region, in the Po Valley, is a historic crossroads between the north and south of Europe, between the West and the Venetian eastern empire. It is here that all the economic, industrial, historical and artistic wealth of Lombardy is found, as in Milan – the country’s economic powerhouse – and in the historic cities of Pavia, Cremona and Mantua. Further north, two other very beautiful historic cities stand at the gates of the Alps: Bergamo and Brescia.

It is in the lakeside and mountain villages that local traditions are best preserved, and another way to discover the region is through wine and gastronomic itineraries that often allow you to discover these small villages and authentic landscapes.
