Milan CathedralItaly’s main economic and financial city, an international centre of fashion and elegance, Milan is a rich and dynamic city. Nearly 1.3 million Milanese live there, and its metropolitan area is the largest in Italy with its 4 million inhabitants.
The long history of the powerful Lombard city has left it with very fine buildings, such as its vast
Gothic Cathedral bristling with hundreds of spires, its Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II covered by a large glass roof with a steel frame, the Sforza Castle, the La Scala Theatre, as well as several churches including the basilicas built in the 4th century by Ambrose of Milan. These buildings and the many museums preserve artistic treasures such as the Last Supper painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Sober and elegant boulevards intersect in the city centre and sum up the general appearance of Milan fairly well. An important district, the “fashion quadrilateral”, lives mainly on fashion and shopping. However, one can also relax in Sempione Park or in the Navigli district, whose canals of medieval origin have recently been renovated.
The Milanese gastronomy is also generous, known for specialities such as the Milanese cutlet, ossobuco, risotto, cassoeula or panettone.
