Seeing Milan in one day
- Start from Piazza Duomo, with the magnificent Duomo Gothic cathedral, with its 2,245 statues and the superb view from the terrace, among the spires of the roof (access by stairs or lift, for a fee). Be careful, however, of the queue which can be long on some days.
- Directly overlooking Piazza Duomo, the majestic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II which leads to Piazza della Scala.
- On Piazza della Scala, stands the famous La Scala theatre whose interior is worth a visit.
- The Piazza Mercanti is a beautiful Milanese square with medieval and Renaissance palaces.
- The Sforza Castle, a former 14th-century military fortress, converted into a palace by the Dukes of Milan, on the edge of Parco Sempione.
- Near the castle and Parco Sempione, the pedestrian streets of the Brera district (around the Brera art gallery) are well suited to the aperitif (the aperitivo, a true Milanese institution), towards Via Brera. The neighbouring Corso Garibaldi has many restaurants.
- The fashion district with its luxury boutiques, and Corso Vittorio Emmanuele II, a pedestrian street with more affordable shops.
Seeing Milan in two days and more
In addition to the previous day:
- In the northern part of the city centre, the Brera art gallery is one of the most important Italian museums.
- In the western part of the city centre, several remarkable sites can be discovered:
- Santa Maria delle Grazie, with the famous Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci kept in the adjoining museum.
- The Leonardo da Vinci Museum of Science and Technology, with models by the master and vast sections devoted to science and technology.
- The Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio with its early Christian elements, one of the two oldest basilicas in Milan.
- The fresco-covered church of San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore
- The Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan, the oldest in the city, with its late Roman remains
- South of the previous basilica, the Navigli district, has become a trendy area of Milan, where the pleasant banks of the historic canals have been redeveloped.
- North-east of central Milan, beyond the Central Station, you may be interested in the modern business district, with its skyscrapers around Piazza Gae-Aulenti
