Santa Margherita Ligure

Located on the Gulf of Tigullio, near the mount of Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure is a small town with many points of interest, although overshadowed by its famous neighbor Portofino.
This former fishing village, which like many of them has been transformed by tourism into a seaside resort with a small port. It has many establishments, bars and restaurants, while remaining pleasant without too many frills.
It is located in a small bay between pretty hills, known for the 17th-century Villa Durazzo with its Italian gardens. The historic center, characterized by pastel-colored houses, also preserves the castle, pretty villas and sanctuaries such as the Capuchin convent or the church of San Giacomo di Corte.

Heritage

The Villa Durazzo brings together two noble villas: the Villa Durazzo-Centurione from 1678, and a second villa from 1820. Baroque in style, the facade has a double loggia and the interior is richly decorated, with gilded stuccos, frescoes (works by Gregorio De Ferrari), period furniture or the chapel. The Vaymer room stands out in particular with its mirrors and crystals. The park is rich with its varied plants, its paths, the rose garden, the fountains, the Chinese pavilion and the panorama.

The castle of Santa Margherita Ligure overlooks the sea from a promontory, built in the early 17th century, dating back to the Republic of Genoa. The site can be visited, and is often a venue for exhibitions.

The church of San Giacomo di Corte, originally in Romanesque style from the 12th century, was greatly modified in the 17th century with a Baroque style, including its elegant facade, an interior rich in polychrome marbles and works of art, and the organ from 1834.

Several beaches are accessible in Santa Margherita Ligure, at Ghaia for the one closest to the center, at Paraggi for a more beautiful beach.

Getting to Portofino

• On foot, a beautiful 5km route, along the road with a planned path, footbridges, etc. An opportunity for very beautiful views
• Bus: about 15 minutes
• Boat: another way to discover the beauty of the coast and unique panoramas, in 30 minutes.
