Noli

Noli is a superb little seaside resort, set on its tranquil bay, with a lovely medieval historic centre that makes it one of the most beautiful medieval villages in Liguria.

Overview and heritage

The town of Noli made its fortune from 1097 onwards with its participation in the First Crusade, becoming a maritime power endowed with privileges. It was even designated as the fifth maritime republic.
The surrounding coast is very beautiful, one of the most attractive in Liguria; its sandy beaches and cliffs are pleasant, and the hinterland offers lovely hikes.
The village has no shortage of shops, bars and restaurants, but it stands out above all for its rich heritage.

The evocative castle of the Marquises Del Carretto (12th-14th centuries) on Monte Ursino overlooks Noli, whose appearance dates back to the alterations of the 15th and 16th centuries, with its ramparts joining the village.
Among the many houses and the medieval towers of the historic centre is the Cathedral of Saint Peter, from the early 13th century (Romanesque), rebuilt in the Baroque era.
The second circuit of walls dates from the 12th-13th centuries. The town hall, together with its tower, was the centre of the political and economic life of the Republic.
Other towers in reddish brick characterise Noli; the Loggia della Repubblica with its arches dates from the 14th-15th centuries, leading to Piazza Dante with the Marine Tower from the 13th century, near the Viale-Salvarezza Palace (late 17th century). The Papone Tower (13th-14th centuries) is just outside the first circuit of walls, linked to the castle ramparts.
The episcopal palace on the slopes is now a hotel, which preserves historic features such as frescoes and inscriptions. The 14th-century Porta San Giovanni is topped by the tower of the same name crowned with merlons.
The Canto Tower facing the cathedral dates from the 13th century, so called because it stands at the corner of several streets.
The church of San Paragorio with its white and pink colours has a 15th-century portico flanked by medieval tombs. It was the former cathedral, an important monument. From the 11th century and built on an early Christian church, with 15th-century frescoes, a 12th-century wooden crucifix in Byzantine style, and an evocative crypt.

Bergeggi

Bergeggi is a small village on the slopes of the hill, and a beautiful coast with an island offshore and an underwater park.The island of Bergeggi is an imposing, very photogenic wild rock 50 metres high. It is home to remnants, including those of an ancient 6th-century monastery.
Three beaches are accessible, including the Lido delle Sirene facing the island, ideal for divers. On the rocky coast the Grotta Marina is one of the most beautiful in Liguria, with organised visits. It has been used since prehistoric times.
The church of Saint Martin of Tours is charming, from the 16th century.
