Among the many lakes of northern Italy, in the Alpine foothills, three stand out for their size: Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, located in different Italian regions.
These are true holiday destinations with many facets, for relaxing, exploring a unique heritage or hiking the trails and peaks.
Alongside these there are also several charming smaller lakes, including Lake Iseo, Lake Orta and Lake Lugano as the most important.
Lake Maggiore is the westernmost, between Piedmont and Lombardy, close to the high Alpine peaks, and stands out in particular for its Borromean Islands, the garden islands.
Lake Como is located in Lombardy north of Milan, whose western part is renowned for its luxury tourism, famous for its historic villas and spectacular landscapes along the shore that follows its inverted Y shape.
Lake Garda is the easternmost, straddling Lombardy, Trentino and Veneto. It is also the largest, a vast body of water with many faces, between its beaches, historic towns and the peaks of the north.
