A suggested itinerary for visiting the upper town of Bergamo, the città alta, reaching it by the funicular. In addition, refer to the article on the sites to see in Bergamo.

map-bergamo-citta-altaFrom the lower town of Bergamo, the funicular reaches the old square Piazza del Mercato delle Scarpe (Shoe Market Square in English), which formerly hosted a shoe market.
A short climb leads to the Rocca di Bergamo, with a very beautiful panorama over the upper town, its roofs and its towers.
Not far away, narrow streets lead to the former Convent of San Francesco (Saint Francis) with its charming old cloisters and its frescoes.
Beside it, the Piazza Mercato del Fieno (the hay market in English) has kept its beautiful medieval tower houses, although they are lower than they originally were.
At the intersection of the two streets that were the Roman streets cardo and decumanus, the Gombito Tower rises to 52 metres (compared with 64 in the Middle Ages). It houses the Tourist Office. Very close by, the beautiful washhouse dates back to the end of the 19th century.
One then reaches the Piazza Vecchia, the historic heart of Bergamo with its superb buildings (fountain, Palazzo della Ragione, Podestà’s palace with the torre Civica, Angelo Mai library).
Separated from the previous square by the arcades of the Palazzo della Ragione, the Piazza Duomo is unmissable, with the cathedral, the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the baptistery and the superb Colleoni Chapel.
The via Colleoni, the main artery of the historic centre, heads towards the west of the town, lined with shops and restaurants. It leads to the interesting Visconti Citadel, where you can find in particular the Natural Sciences Museum and the Archaeological Museum.
Further west, one can admire the beautiful Porta Sant’Alessandro. From there, one can follow the Viale delle Mura to discover part of the superb Venetian walls with their beautiful views, as far as the Porta San Giacomo, another beautiful gate.
