The Piazza delle Erbe is certainly one of the most beautiful Italian squares and also the oldest in Verona, since it partially corresponds to the Roman forum. For centuries it was the heart of the city and the market square.
It is also a popular and lively square, with bars and restaurants under its arcades. The market is held there on Saturdays and Sundays.
Description
Several monuments stand on the square, including the medieval fountain of the Madonna Verona with its Roman statue, a 13th-century tribune, a column topped by the Lion of Saint Mark, and another small ancient column topped by a medieval aedicule.
It is also surrounded by medieval buildings and beautiful palaces such as the Palazzo della Ragione with the Lamberti Tower, the Casa dei Giudici, the Casa dei Mazzanti, or the baroque Palazzo Maffei where the Roman Capitol stood. The latter is adorned with statues of Greek gods: Jupiter, Hercules, Minerva, Venus, Mercury and Apollo.

Lamberti Tower
Towering over the Piazza delle Erbe at 84 metres high, the Lamberti Tower, which is integrated into the Palazzo della Ragione, is the tallest tower in Verona. The terrace can be reached by lift or by the 368 steps, to enjoy the superb view.
When it was built in the 12th century it measured only 34 metres. It was in the 15th century that it was rebuilt after a collapse and crowned with its octagonal bell tower.
The two main bells are named Rengo and Marangona. The first, which was the largest, called the people to gather for events or warned of danger. The second marked working hours and rang the alarm in case of fire.
