The Roman Theatre of Verona is the oldest monument in the city, built in the 1st century BC on the slope of the San Pietro hill on the edge of the Adige, on the other side of the river from the historic centre, to which the Stone Bridge led. This district is called Veronetta.
Presentation
The tiers of the theatre followed the slope of the hill, in the way the Greeks had often built theatres for several centuries.
It was only excavated from the 19th century onwards, when it was entirely covered with various buildings. Since the Middle Ages many of its stones were used to build monuments and palaces in Verona. Various vestiges nevertheless remain that recall the majesty of the original building, with portions of the cavea and the tiers, arcades and galleries, part of the stage and the side staircase. The church of San Siro, erected on part of the cavea, has been preserved.
In summer, it hosts theatrical and musical performances with the Estate Teatrale Veronese.
It is associated with the archaeological museum housed in a former convent, which is reached by a staircase. Originally the staircase led to two superimposed galleries above the cavea that served several terraces.

Archaeological Museum of the Theatre
The Archaeological Museum of the Roman Theatre has occupied since 1923 the former convent of Saint Jerome, founded by the Jesuits on the hill around 1430. It collects objects found in Verona and its surroundings, including mosaics and sculptures.
One can discover in particular floor mosaics from a Roman villa at Negrar, imperial busts, Etruscan and Roman bronze statues, including a female head with two faces, glassware and ceramics, and a bronze bust. Outside are displayed in particular columns and funerary stelae, and one can visit the pretty cloister.
